The D3400 does not work well with manual focus lenses or any AF lens with an aperture ring. If a lens has an aperture ring, the D3400 will not be able to autofocus (turn the focus ring manually and look for the green OK dot on the lower left of the finder), and it will not be able to meter or set exposure (use Manual exposure and pray).
If you can't get a focus confirmation when focusing manually and or don't get aperture confirmation when setting aperture then the chip in the lens may have failed. One thing you can try is to mount the lens, on camera body switch from AF to Manual then back again. I had one lens not focus once and after doing that the lens started working again.
